Halloween Mommy & Me Class

I love crafting with Callie and Halloween is one of my favorite holidays to make décor.  I seem to miss Halloween crafting each year so I'm excited to have an adult class (posted here) and this kids class on my calendar!  This year I started to pilot some mommy (or daddy) and me classes since so many of her friends loved to make things too.

This October's class is all about Halloween.  The kids will be making three projects in an hour that let them be creative and give them a little candy to take home (which is probably Callie's favorite part of the class!)  They will be painting a spider jar with a great web coaster, a goodie bag filled with candy, and a treat bag perfect for a fruit snack or peanut butter cup.  The class is designed for 4-7 year olds but even older kids might enjoy making these projects with their parents!

The class costs $10 for one child or $15 for siblings and is taking place on October 4th from 1-2pm at my house in Boise, ID.  Cost includes the supplies for the projects, candy, and adhesive.  Leave me a comment if you are interested in attending or send me an email.

I just have to say that this jar turned out adorable and I cannot wait to see all the variations that come out of the class!

There are several sneak peek items on these projects that are marked below with "new!"

Supplies:
  • Cardstock/DSP:  Tangelo Twist, Very Vanilla, Basic Black, Happy Hauntings DSP (new!)
  • Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black, Tangelo Twist
  • Stamp Sets: A Little Something (new!), Cheer All Year (new!)
  • Accessories: Glue Dots, Spider Web Doilies (new!), Happy Haunting Designer Washi Tape (new!), Tear and Tape, Handheld Stapler, Artisan Label Punch (retired), Clothespins, Scissors, Banner Punch, 1" Circle Punch, Dimensionals
  • Non-SU Accessories: Black Paint, Pint Mason Jars, Googly Eyes, Sponge Brush, CANDY

The class is using the Label Bracket punch on the treat bag since I forgot to move the Artisan Label punch to the retired stack!

Have a craftastic day,

Halloween Crafts - Day 10 - Another Cheesecloth Ghost

Have you seen those great posts in Pinterest to build the life size dress forms for Halloween that stand by themselves in the yard (assuming a big wind doesn't blow?)  This week's kiddo craft for Halloween was the starchy cheesecloth ghosts.  It was a messy project with the kids but they had fun and practiced good hand/eye coordination.  It's a little hard to aim a squirt bottle at cheesecloth and not shoot right through it but thankfully Nana Sandy didn't mind the mess.

When you make these, you have to start with a form for them.  Most blog posts I saw used soda bottles and dowels but you can use what you have around.  In this case, I asked Meghan if we were making Molotov cocktails but neither of us drink soda much so there weren't those bottles to use.  You use tape or washi tape to attach the arms and the Styrofoam ball at the top.

Then you cut your cheesecloth to cover your form.  You want it to pool at the bottom since that is what provides the support for it to stand.  We ended up with about 2 yards on this little guy.

The kiddos spray the liquid starch on the cheesecloth until it's really wet.  Don't forget to really spray around the head or else when you pull it off the form, it won't really hold a shape for a head.

Once thoroughly doused, we recommend letting them dry for about an hour.  We took the kiddos to the park and let them play so they wouldn't touch them!  When we got back, we had to use a hair dryer on the bottom as where the starch dripped down, it was pretty thick and wet.

Callie named her ghosts Scary though it's not scary at all.  She likes to keep her eye on it.

I have one more Halloween project that I will be posting on Sunday.  I am super proud of this project as it's a gift for a very Halloween spirited friend.

As for kiddo crafts, we are done with the Halloween crafts for now for our playdates/  Moving forward, I will post our kiddo craft every Thursday, whether is uses Stampin' Up! materials or not. I think it's important to explore creativity with your children and I hope some of these ideas help make that easier for you and your family!

Halloween Crafts - Day 9 - QTip Skeleton

So we are having a BOY!  Yesterday was our big appointment and there it was, easy to see, that the McCain name will live on.  Conlyn is over the moon and Callie is excited to play tractors with her new baby brother.  I didn't put much effort into this page but will fix it later since it will be the first page of his baby book.

Today's post is actually the first Halloween craft the kiddos did on their playdates.  I loved this project because it allowed Callie to practice matching.  I made the pattern using Elmer's Glue and she layered the QTips on it to match.  This is when we realized our kids are perfectionists and if copying from an image, it has to match exactly.  If making this with your kids, I recommend cutting the rib pieces in half and not having them layer one QTip on another - they teeter and take a while to dry.  This was originally inspired by a pin Meghan found on Pinterest.

Supplies:
Black Marker, Scissors, Elmer's Glue, QTips, Black Construction Paper

Halloween Crafts - Day 7 - Toilet Roll Pumpkins

This Wednesday's Play Date craft was toilet roll pumpkins.  It's been really fun having the kids look forward to their crafts together and actually choose to do them before they play with cars and princesses!  This idea came from this pin on Pinterest.  They had more fun than it looks like in this photo - I made them take a photo instead of eat cheese sticks.  Bad mommy.

For this type of craft, I highly recommend using the black foam brushes.  There is a lot of surface to cover with a little paint brush and they will lose interest.  Also, the foam brushes prevent the "glob effect" which looks cool but takes a long time to dry when doing a two-stage craft like this one.

First you paint the toilet paper roll with orange paint.  The mommies found that it worked best if we put our fingers into the rolls and held them while the kiddos did their painting.  Then we set them on a paper plate to dry.  The top of the pumpkin is an aluminum foil roll cut to about 1" with scissors.  It's painted with small paint brushes in green paint.

Then the kids washed their hands and went to play while the paint dried.

The strips of Pumpkin Pie cardstock are cut at 1" x 11.  Use a bone folder to curl the paper to avoid hard folds when you assemble.  We ended up needing 10 to get a full pumpkin look.  Once your pumpkin is dry, use glue dots on each end of the strip and attach to the inside top and bottom of the roll.  This held the kids attention for about 6 strips - then it became a race to which mommy could finish first.  Congrats Meghan for winning (reference OCD crafting mom again for me....)

Once you have all the strips attached, you can use Elmer's glue to layer a 2 1/2 Circle of Pumpkin Pie on the top and bottom of the pumpkin.  Then put glue on the bottom of the green roll to attach to the top of your pumpkin.

Supplies:
Orange/Green Paint (non-SU), Toilet Paper Roll, 2 1/2 Circle Punch, Pumpkin Pie cardstock, Glue Dots, Elmer's Glue (non-SU), Bone Folder

Non-Kiddo Version

If you didn't have a kiddo at home and wanted to make these for a fun centerpiece, you can do it without the paint and toilet paper roll.  Cut a rectangle of Pumpkin Pie and form into a cyclinder.  Seal with sticky strip to make the roll stay.  Curl the strips of Pumpkin Pie cardstock with the bone folder and attach to the cardstock tube with glue dots.  Use glue dots to put the 2 1/2 Circle on the top and bottom.  Make a small cylinder with the Gumball Green cardstock and attach to the top using more glue dots.  You could also use DSP to make a décor covered pumpkin.

When you order online, make sure you use hostess code TUBSEAHG and be entered for a drawing as the mystery hostess at the end of the month.  I have enough orders to qualify for a workshop so someone will be a lucky winner!!!

Envelope Punch Board Update

SU has noticed that one of the envelope measurements on the Envelope Punch Board is incorrect. The dimensions for the 5-1/2" x 8" card size envelope are 1/4" too small. The correct envelope measurement for this card size is: 10-5/8" x 10-5/8" (paper size); 4-3/8" (score line). The Envelope Punch Board still functions perfectly and they have corrected the measurement chart on the punch board. New labels are available through Demonstrator Support, if you would like one. Contact me today if you need one.

Special reminder for Stampin' Up! cards: These envelope measurements are meant for simple cards, without a lot of dimension. At Stampin' Up! we love adding dimension to our cards, but that can make the envelope a bit snug. So, if you need an envelope to fit your cards with lots of flair, go up an envelope size (or two) for the perfect fit.

Halloween Crafts - Day 5 - Vinyl Pumpkins

Today's post is very quick and simple.  The pumpkin was purchased at a craft store.  They are really proud of these things - I couldn't believe how expensive they were but I guess if you add up all the money you spend on pumpkins each year, they are worth it!  If you find a coupon or a sale, they become more reasonable.

A few years ago, we were selling vinyl art, Décor Elements, through Stampin' Up!  I bought these great pumpkin faces but never used them because I was too cheap to buy the pumpkin. :)  I found this cute hat with a headband on it that I thought would look great on Callie.  But apparently her lack of love for hats extends to hats tied to headbands.

In five minutes, I was able to apply the vinyl, put the hat on it, and have a great pumpkin to put on display on my house.  Any I might just wear that hat when we take Callie trick or treating.

21 new items have been added to the clearance rack for Stampin' Up!  Check out those items here:

Halloween Crafts - Day 4 - Little Styrofoam Ghosts

Another great craft to make with your kids are these easy little Styrofoam ghosts. The supplies are minimal and the results are well worth it.  The supplies were mostly left over from my big ghost I showed yesterday.  Once I created that, I realized how Callie and Henry could totally make these without a big mess.

Our kiddos are working on how they hold their pens and this craft let them practice that and coloring in the lines.  They mastered the pen holding but the lines still need work.  It makes it look very, very cute though to me.  It took a lot for me to not help Callie too much....  OCD crafter right here...

Supplies:
Styrofoam, Eye Rings, Cheesecloth, Black Marker

They were so proud of themselves when they were done.  We plan on hanging these with fishing line so you can't see them. Callie's will hang in the house so nothing happens to it but the others we made are already hanging in the trees outside.

Callie has so much fun crafting and playing with Henry.  She can't contain her happiness!  Her ghost looks a bit like Jack, does it?

Thank You Thursday

Halloween Crafts - Day 3 - Big Styrofoam Ghosts

This is another post inspired by Pinterest.  I made this one by myself as Callie was too interested playing in the cheesecloth to help me much.  She sure loves that magnifying glass!  I was planning to cover that with DSP like I saw on Pinterest but she never puts it down.

We used an 8" Styrofoam ball and punched out two eyes using the Large Oval punch and Basic Black cardstock.  They are stuck on the ghost using pop dots (retired).  Then I cut about 2 yards of cheesecloth and put over the top.  We screwed in the eye ring through the cheesecloth to keep it on there.  This will be hanging out front so I didn't want the cheesecloth to blow away.

Callie didn't quite understand what we were making at that point but she remarked that it was as tall as she was!

Supplies:
8" Styrofoam ball (non-SU), Eye Ring (non-SU), Cheesecloth (non-SU), Large Oval Punch, Basic Black Cardstock, Pop Dots (retired)

I have to say that I put this outside of my craft room window (which faces the front of my house) and I keep looking up thinking someone is at the door.  It is a super easy and super cool decoration to have out front and I hope you make some of them too to hang inside or out.

Halloween Crafts - Day 2 - Rock Spiders

Today's project was both fun to make and fun to watch the kiddos make.  The project was inspired by a post I saw on Pinterest - see you can actually make the things you Pin - who knew?

We found some rocks in our backyard to take with us on our crafting playdate.  Turned out that I only had acrylic black paint so thank goodness Meghan had other paint that was kid friendly.

Callie prefers to craft than take photographs.

They had so much fun we ended up outside looking for more rocks and using golf balls too for the spiders.  Callie has a tendency to say "Spiders!!!" from an episode of Doc McStuffins so she did that the whole time she made these.  Henry started doing it too at the end!

We hot glued on the pipe cleaners on the bottom of the rock using a hot glue gun. I know now why the first post on Pinterest had straight legs - it's harder to bend these than I thought.  I wish I could blame that disaster on Callie but I can't - that was all me.

The pebble spiders are adorable.  We wanted to see if we could do them small and use the leftover pipe cleaners.  Looks like we can!

Callie made a golf ball spider for her Nana and Papa.  If you make these, be aware that the glue will make the ball stand up off the legs.  Rocks work better since they are flat on the bottom.

Supplies:
Black Paint, Paint Brushes, Pipe cleaners, Googlie Eyes (retired), Glue Gun

This is a great project to do with your kids.   You could make a web of cheesecloth to go underneath them and you can get pipe cleaners at any craft store.  To help them dry, you can hit them with a hair dryer.  We were going to use the oven at 250 but we were afraid that would cause an unexpected science experiment with the golf balls.

Halloween Crafts - Day 1 - Painted Mason Jars

Welcome to my week of Halloween crafting posts!  Every year I say that I'm going to make more for Halloween and every year this holiday slips past me.  I think Halloween is one of the best crafty holidays of the year - there are great paper lines, spooky and cute inspirations, and great pictures which leaves a lot of open options for crafting and décor.

I posted my spooky banner a while back but this week I will post a series of projects that were either developed using Stampin' Up! products or were done during our weekly crafting playdate with Callie's buddy, Henry.

Today's post is the first project Callie and I did together for the holidays. I was inspired by this post on Pinterest that had mason jars wrapped in cheesecloth with googlie eyes.  Since Callie is a painter, I thought this might be a better fit for a mommy/daughter project.  As you can see, she was very focused.

I had several different mason jars leftover from canning that had either cracks in the rim or were missing lids.  I put a squeeze of white paint in the bottom of each jar and gave Callie a paint brush.  She painted the inside and kept all the paint off her and my table!

For the pumpkin jar, I added a little Pumpkin Pie ink refill and for the Frankie jar I added Old Olive.

As you can see, she had a blast.

When it came to decorate them, I used leftover vinyl from when we sold it at Stampin' Up! to do the face on the pumpkin jar.  I also used some Season of Style Washi Tape on the rim.

The ghost jar is the 1" Circle Punch and the 3/4 Circle Punch. It even has eyelashes cut out from the black under the eyelids.  It was supposed to have a cheesecloth over it but it looked a bit like a ghost sheik so I left it alone.  It has Witches Brew Washi tape on the rim.

The hair on the Frankie jar was cut by Callie, confirming that she is indeed left-handed.  The eyes are made using the 3/4 Circle Punch, 1/2 Circle Punch, and small oval punches.  I free cut out the mouth.  The hair is attached using sticky strip and dimensionals.
