Countdown to Christmas - Day 24

It's Christmas Eve and it's going to be a very White Christmas in Boise, ID.  We had about 6 inches of snow last night and about that much the day before.  Crazy considering I was like 7 years old the last time I remember this much snow this quickly!

I wanted to share some of the great homemade cards I got this year from friends and family that featured Stampin' Up! supplies.  I always appreciate seeing their creations and their messages each year and know they will inspire you like they inspire me!

Countdown to Christmas - Days 22 & 23

Well, I almost made it but I still broke my personal record for days posted in a row over Christmas.  Sorry I forgot to post Day 22 so today you get a two-fer!

Yesterday was family baking day.  Callie and I made covered pretzels while Michael licked sprinkles from his plate.  Don't worry - none of his pretzels made it out the door to neighbors and friends.  I put our pretzels in a cool little gusseted bag and then tied one of these tags around it using our Candy Cane Lane Baker's Twine.  It made for a cute pop of holiday!

To make these tags, just run a 5 1/2 x 2 3/4 piece of Very Vanilla through the Big Shot using your magnetic platform.  Next stamp the scrumptious stamp from Here's to Cheers stamp set using Early Espresso.  Then you can run two scraps of Real Red through the Big Shot using the precision plate to get the filigree piece and the curvy line on the front of the tag.  Both are adhered using a fine tip glue pen.  Tie it off using a piece of twine long enough to tie around the bag!

Supplies:
  • Cardstock/DSP: Very Vanilla (5 1/2 x 2 3/4), Real Red (scrap)
  • Ink: Early Espresso
  • Stamp Set: Here's to Cheers
  • Accessories: Big Shot, Magnetic Platform, Precision Plate, Cutting Mats, Cheerful Tags Thinlits, Basic Rhinestones, Fine Tip Glue Pen, Candy Cane Lane Baker's Twine
Today's other project is an adorable Santa card.  To make this card, you will use the Detailed Santa Thinlits.  I ran the Santa through my Big Shot using the precision plate - that way I could make sure each swirl cut all the way through!  Then I ran it through the Big Shot using the magnetic platform and the slanted line thinlit (to make sure it stayed straight and in place.)  Add Tear and Tape to the back of the Santa, just above the slanted lines.  Then attach a strip of Red Glimmer Paper so it shows through the holes.  Tie a piece of Red Twine around the bottom and attach to the folded Real Red card using adhesive or the Fine Tip Glue Pen.  Stamp the saying from Stitched with Cheer or whatever stamp set you have for the holidays using Tuxedo Black Memento Ink.  Adorable, right?

Supplies:
  • Cardstock: Whisper White (2 @ 5 1/4 x 4), Real Red (8 1/2 x 5 1/2), Red Glimmer Paper (4 x 1/2)
  • Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black
  • Stamps: Stitched with Cheer
  • Accessories: Detailed Santa Framelits, Big Shot, Cutting Mats and Magnetic Platform, Candy Cane Baker's Twine - 17", Adhesive, Scissors, Big Shot Brush

Countdown to Christmas - Day 21

When I think quick and easy card, I go straight to washi tape.  It offers so much color and is so easy for little hands and big hands to use.  This quick notecard is a great way to make cards in mass and have them still have that homemade look!

Just run strips of washi tape on a 3 x 2 piece of Whisper White.  Wrap the ends around and mount on the center of the Crumb Cake Note card using dimensionals.  Then stamp the saying on a piece of 2 x 1 1/2 (or whatever size your saying is) and mount using dimensionals on the right and adhesive on the left.  I like to use Tear and Tape because washi tape can sometimes be slick and it always stays tight!  Then I tied a bow in Cherry Cobbler twine and attached with a glue dot.  This card would work for a present too for a birthday party or a baby shower or even a congrats.

    Supplies:
    • Cardstock/DSP: Whisper White (3 x 2, 2 x 1/2), Crumb Cake Notecard and Envelope
    • Ink: Cherry Cobbler
    • Stamp Set: Stitched with Cheer
    • Accessories: Warmth and Cheer Washi Tape, Baker's Twine Trio Pack, Glue Dots, Dimensionals, Tear and Tape, and Scissors

Countdown to Christmas - Day 20

We are so close to the end of school and the excitement of both kids for Christmas is contagious!  I wish I could show you the amazing things Callie made for Christmas using our new watercolor pencils but at the risk of tipping off the grandparents, who may read this blog, we are going to keep those under wraps for a few more days!

Instead, I thought I'd share the hostess tags I made for the events we head to for the holidays.  I taught these on two separate occasions but the instructions are the same.  I'm so relieved that the Cheerful Tags Framelits are not retiring yet - they are so versatile and I really enjoy playing with them.  Depending on the paper you paired them with, they'd make a cute homemade touch to a bunco night, a baby shower, a birthday, a bbq, etc.

To start, take a 5 1/2 x 2 3/4 piece of Very Vanilla and run the Bottle Topper tag through the Big Shot with your magnetic platform and cutting mats.  Keep the circle that is punched out - you will use that for your Cheers stamp.  Then careful fold the tag on the score line at the top.  It's easier to work with these if you do that step first.

The first example utilizes the This Christmas DSP cut to 2 1/4 x 1 3/4.  I slipped the ribbon through the slots first (using around 14-18" depending on the ribbon type) and then attached a piece of Early Espresso (1 3/4 x 2 1/4) just adhering the sides so the ribbon slides.  Then I sponged the DSP and added a strip of our Candy Cane Lane Washi tape and attached with adhesive.  Stamp the cheer image from the Here's to Cheers stamp set and mount with dimensionals on a 1 3/8 Red Glimmer Paper circle. That is attached with Tear and Tape.

The other example just uses the Warmth and Cheer DSP instead so I swapped out the satin ribbon for the 5/8 Burlap, switched the ink to Crumb Cake, the cardstock to Cherry Cobbler and the glimmer circle to gold.  This one has a more rustic, drink this wine by the fire, sort of feel!

Countdown to Christmas - Day 19

We are getting close to Christmas and the hum of the last minute "to dos" is getting louder and louder in our house.  I'm so excited to have my daughter home for two weeks to cuddle and craft with and to see how her and her brother do over the weekend with all the holiday festivities and family time.

One of the things I love most about Christmas is scrapbooking it.  I like to make my albums from scratch, buy album kits to assemble, and love it when family makes albums for me to use.  As you can see, I have a lot of them and they are usually up high where little curious hands can't rip them this year!

When Stampin' Up! started selling Project Life, I was a bit wary.  I mean, how fun can plug and place scrapbooking be?  What about all that time and effort spent building a page to find that your photos are the wrong size or your photos are vertical and you needed horizontal? What would scrapbooking be without having to pull all your supplies out along with the pictures and ink and such?  What if you could maybe get multiple pages done before multiple months had passed?  What if you could actually capture the memory of a specific child moment before that moment faded into the mental abyss to party with "did I remember to shut the garage door?" and "did I turn the oven off?"

So you can see, my mind told me to try Project Life and I'm grateful.  It will be a big focus in my business in 2017 because it is something I'm passionate about and something I really enjoy.  One of my favorite thing about it is that I get to have a base of an album done before the holidays even started.  I still struggle to pick the right photo to highlight for each event or memory but I don't break into a cold sweat.  I don't spend hours on my PC journaling because I place a journaling card in each spread to make sure I can handwrite the memories.  And before you say you don't like your handwriting, remember that your children and family do and they are who is going to look at your albums anyhow.

I encourage you to check out our Hello December card kit and accessory pack for this holiday season.  It will help you capture the magic of the season without having to capture the stress of the season as well.  Below are a few of my sample pages.  You can see that I have a lot of spaces left to print out and fill out and I'm excited about that!  When the holiday is over, I will go back through and add some bling to the pages from the accessory pack but it's a lot easier to do that once the photos are in the albums.  Plus, if I end up with more photos than I expected, I can just buy more page protectors to go in my albums and I'm all set again!  I use our page protector pockets to keep memorabilia like school programs and the Christmas Light Treasure Map that happened earlier this month.  My photo cards are also hole punched and added to the back of these albums each year so I can keep those photos from friends and family as well.

These products are only available while supplies last and will retire at the conclusion of the 2016 Holiday catalog on January 3rd, 2017.

Countdown to Christmas - Day 18

I've mentioned often that I'm a big fan of thank you notes.  I think telling someone thank you for hosting a gathering, for a gift, for that perfect word or gesture when it was most needed, for being kind -- I just don't think you can say thank you enough.

I try really hard on this with my children.  Now that Callie is sounding out words and writing, there is no reason she can't say thank you with a short message.  This year at kid camp, we designed this project together featuring the Seasonal Decorative Masks.  We taped off a tree on the template using painter's tape.  Then I drew lines on it so she could line up the cardstock.  We sponged the tree shape onto the Whisper White cardstock and then adhered it to the folded Crumb Cake card.

The kids also used the "Thank You" and "You're the Best" sayings from the All Things Thanks stamp set, coming soon in the 2017 Occasions catalog.  I then took all my extra Paper Pumpkin sequins and random sequins and had them adhere them to the tree with glue dots.  They punched out a gold star out of glimmer paper and viola - a handmade holiday thank you that they had lots of fun doing!

          Supplies:
          • Cardstock/DSP: Crumb Cake (8 1/2 x 5 1/2, 1 x 1), Whisper White (5 1/4 x 4), Gold Glimmer Paper (scrap)
          • Ink: Garden Green
          • Stamp Set: All Things Thanks (sneak peek!)
          • Accessories: Seasonal Decorative Masks, Paper Pumpkin Sequins - October kit, Itty Bitty Accents Punch Pack (retired), Glue Dots

Countdown to Christmas - Day 17

Today's card was taught to a very small group in early December but seemed very appropriate to share today.  This morning, we braved the icy roads to carol with my daughter's Girl Scout troop at the assisted living facility.  The girls made song books and candy cane reindeer a few weeks ago and now they got to carol and pass out the reindeer.  My favorite part was actually how they drew questions out of a bag and then went around to all the residents and asked them.  The questions were things like "What was your favorite toy as a child?" and "What is your favorite Christmas song?"

As a parent, it made me so happy to see my daughter put aside her stranger danger and ask the questions and really listen to the answers.  She's six and her exposure to older people has been very limited and she was just such a blessing this morning.  It was also a special experience for me because I could see how children can bring the magic of Christmas to any room, even if they don't know the people they are influencing.  There were so many smiles and compliments and warmth.  An experience to treasure for sure.

So today's card is about spreading Christmas cheer because that's what Callie and her friends spread today.  The card features the peppermint paper from the Candy Cane Lane DSP just as they passed out peppermint reindeer.  And the importance of letting people know you are thinking of them during this season and all year round is captured just by sending this card out and you sending your own.

            Supplies:
            • Cardstock/DSP: Crumb Cake, Whisper White, Candy Cane Lane DSP, Red Glimmer Paper
            • Ink: Real Red and Crumb Cake Markers
            • Stamp Set: Tin of Tags
            • Accessories: Big Shot, Cutting Mats and Platform, Stitched Shapes Framelits, Warmth and Cheer Washi Tape, Candy Cane Lane Baker's Twine, 1/2 Circle Punch, Tear and Tape, Dimensionals, Adhesive, and Scissors
            Directions:
            • Ink up the stamp using the Red Marker on the words and Crumb Cake on the stars.  Stamp on the white cardstock and let dry.  Then run through the Big Shot to punch out.
            • Attach the piece of candy DSP to the Crumb Cake.
            • Add a strip of crumb cake washi above the designer paper.
            • Attach the strip of sparkly red glimmer paper using adhesive.
            • Wrap the thread around the card twice and knot.
            • Add the Crumb Cake cardstock to the card.
            • Add the circle to the card using dimensionals to cover up the knot.
            • Punch out three candies from the scrap paper using the 1/2 circle punch and pop up on dimensionals as shown.

Countdown to Christmas - Day 16

I'm still caught up - I cannot believe it.  But if you saw the state of my house, you'd know certain things were sacrificed for me to keep up on anything crafty!

Today I'm sharing another set of great tags that were made during my Christmas in October camp.  I love these tags.  They are quick, easy, and use scraps with minimal stamping.

              To make:
              • Punch 1/8 circle punch on squares of DSP.  Fold twine in half and put the bent end through the hole.  Thread the two ends through it and pull lightly (so it doesn't rip!)
              • Stamp the white pieces with the To/From using Crumb Cake ink.  Attach the circles to the center of four DSP pieces using adhesive.
              • Cut out the embellishments and layer on the tags using dimensionals.
              • Attach the real red circles to the other two DSP squares.  Layer the strip of White using adhesive.  Add the punched candy circles to the tags using dimensionals.

              Supplies:
              • Cardstock: Candy Cane DSP (6 patterns @ 2 1/2 x 2 1/2, scrap for cut outs), Whisper White (4 @ 2" Circles, 2 @ 1 x 2 1/2), Real Read (2 @ 2" Circles)
              • Ink: Crumb Cake
              • Stamps: Tin of Tags
              • Accessories: Candy Cane Bakers Twine, Scissors, Dimensionals, 2" Circle Punch, Adhesive, 1/8 circle punch
These were so much fun, I even had my daughter make a set using our decorative masks and we ended up doing these at my Mommy & Me camp.  I love that she filled them out already and that she's giving herself a gift.....  These types of projects help kids work on their hand-eye coordination through the cutting and also they loved the artistry of using the masks and a brayer to create the background.  You could use any to/from stamp but I've found my kiddos have better luck with foam stamps then photopolymer so I had them use the woodmount Cozy Christmas set from last year's holiday catalog.

              Supplies:
              • Cardstock/DSP: Crumb Cake (4 @ 3 x 3), Whisper White (4 @ 3 x 1), Candy Cane Lane DSP (scrap with one of each image)
              • Ink: Crumb Cake
              • Stamp Set: Cozy Christmas (retired)
              • Accessories: Seasonal Decorative Masks, Brayer, Dimensionals, Scissors, and Adhesive

Countdown to Christmas - Day 15

Today I'm sharing the gift card holder I made for my Paper Pumpkin pre-paid subscriptions.  Each year I try to use the holiday set from the November Paper Pumpkin to make the gift cards.  We all forget to use these stamps outside of the kits they come in so it helps me remember.

I previously posted about how to make these half envelope gift cards so this is another layout for that idea.  I did use a retired punch for the tab on the top but I can't remember it's name and you can make one by folding a piece of paper in half and fussy cutting some edges.  I love the little star on the tree to draw in the Cherry Cobbler and I added the strip of cardstock to the bottom to cover a crooked stamp but it ended up looking great.  Lesson there: Keep playing until it looks right unless you drop an ink pad or something on it.....

                Supplies:
                • Cardstock/DSP: Very Vanilla, This Christmas Specialty DSP, Cherry Cobbler
                • Ink: Garden Green
                • Stamp Set: Wonderful Winterland
                • Accessories: Big Shot, Cutting Mats and Platform, Stitched Shapes Framelits, Linen Thread, Regals Enamel Shapes, Dimensionals, Scissors, and Adhesive

Countdown to Christmas - Day 14

Quick post today with an easy idea for Christmas ornament that will look great on your tree and isn't messy!

This ornament is one I taught for my Mommy & Me Christmas Class.  The kids loved the washi tape and were able to practice their handwriting on the back of the stick.  Some even got some knot tying skills in but not many - that's where the mommies came in!

Besides the creativity shown by the kids on which side of the paper they used and how they stacked them on the stick, you can either use dimensionals to mount them or glue so it can be done with any kind of paper or adhesive you have on hand.  If you don't have washi tape, you can have them draw on the paper or use other colors.

                  Supplies:
                  • Cardstock/DSP: This Christmas Specialty DSP (3 x 3/4, 2 1/2 x 3/4, 2 x 3/4, 1 1/2 x 3/4)
                  • Ink: None
                  • Stamp Set: None
                  • Accessories: Popsicle Stick, Crop-a-dile, Very Vanilla Thick Baker's Twine, Candy Cane Washi Tape, Dimensionals or Adhesive
I'm going to teach this to Callie's class and have them use watercolor paper.  They can paint on the strips and then mount them when they have dried to have a one of kind ornament or a tree that they can frame like I did with one of Callie's below!  The background in my frame is a 4 x 6 piece of Real Red that I ran through the Big Shot using the Falling Snow TIEF.

Countdown to Christmas - Day 13

Callie loves getting mail.  In December, she will grab the mail every day and make a stack of anything that says "McCain Family" on it instead of just her daddy and I's names.  I tell her every day that each card for Christmas is for all of us but she still insists that those with Family mean they are meant for her to open.

Each one she opens, she reads and then sometimes asks how we know that person if she doesn't recognize the name.  Then she says her favorite part about the card - the image, the colors, the glitter!  She stares at them on the door as they grow and grow and it makes us all smile to see all those Christmas images and photos.  It reminds us of how much love we have in our lives and how much of a blessing each person is.

Many of my friends have been trying to find ways to get their children to understand the true meaning of Christmas.  In many cases, this is coming from a religious perspective or a service perspective to show how lucky they all are.  What about having your children make a few cards and dropping them off at an assisted living center near you?  Giving someone a Christmas card ignites hope and love and that is what we feel Christmas is about.  I don't expect my 6 year old to say that presents are not her favorite part but each year she discovers something more about the season and that is all I could ask for.

Callie and I will be doing this and delivering them when school is out to the facility near us.  And then we will also be giving them a stack of birthday cards to use for their residents for the same reason - because a card shows someone is thinking of you.  What better gift is there than that to give someone?

So speaking of gifts, today's project is a gift card holder that I taught at my Christmas camps.

                    Directions:

                    • Stamp Merry Christmas on one of the smaller rectangles of Very Vanilla.  Set aside to dry.
                    • Fold the score lines for the long Very Vanilla piece.  Put Tear and Tape at 3 1/8. Tear off the backing and adhere against the 5" score line.
                    • Add the Cherry DSP to the inside.  Add the Holly DSP to the outside.
                    • Fold the Cherry Cobbler on the score line and then adhere around the gift card holder so it slides off.
                    • Tie the three twines together in a knot.  Cut the ends and fray.
                    • Punch out the saying using the 1 3/4 punch.  Layer on the Garden Green circle using adhesive.
                    • Put dimensionals on the belly band over the twine and attach the circles.

                    Supplies:
                    • Cardstock: Very Vanilla (2 @ 3 3/4 x 2 1/2, 10 x 4 1/4 - scored at 3, 4, 5, & 8 and cut at 4" line with 1/4 each side remaining), Cherry Cobbler (7 x 1 - scored at 2"), This is Specialty DSP (Green DSP - 2" Circle, Holly DSP - 4 x 1 3/4, 2 @ 4 x 2 3/4, Cherry Lattice - 4 x 1 3/4, 2 @ 4 x 2 3/4, 2 @ 4 x 3/4)
                    • Ink: Cherry Cobbler
                    • Stamps: My Hero (RMHC Set)
                    • Accessories: Bakers Twine Trio - 14" each, 1 3/4 Circle Punch

Countdown to Christmas - Day 12

Since most of my cards have gone out, I thought I'd post the other holiday card I've been sending out.  Now this is a classic example of a card that looks awesome in your mind and great (if I do say so myself) in paper....until you try to make 80 of them.  Each swirl needed brushed, each bow traced in Wink of Stella, and each bow wrapped.  Each green banner needed created, each saying run through the Big Shot, and then when I thought using my Cherry Cobbler cards would help, I realized I had to stamp and cut an additional piece for the inside.  It took forever but was super fun to work on for Family Crafting Day.

Then you have to sign them, sign newsletters, print pictures.  I say "have to" but I really "wanted to" because I love making things for Christmas and this is my way of sending a little bit of time and love to those that I think of throughout the year.  Yes, I could print a card with some great photos and that has worked for me in the past, but this year, I wanted to remind those that we care for and love that we care for and love them.  Regardless of politics, regardless of circumstance, regardless of how long it has been since we have seen them.  We are still thinking of all of you and all of them and everyone this season because our lives are full of blessings called friends and family.

So anyhow, enough sappiness, here are the cards!  I ran a piece of Garden Green through the Big Shot and layered on a piece of This Christmas Specialty Designer Paper using my Fine Tip Glue Pen. Then I made a banner end on a piece of either Garden Green or This Christmas DSP using the Triple Banner Punch and attached all of it to the card front.  The saying is stamped with Garden Green after I punched out the circle using the 2nd circle in the Stitched Shapes Framelit set and it's up on dimensionals.  The bow, ah, that bow.  It's punched out using the Holly Builder Punch.  Then I traced it with the Wink of Stella pen and wrapped a small piece of gold twine around it and added it to the card with dimensionals.  80 of those took the longest so be wary of this step on your cards.....

But they are beautiful, especially in person!

                      Supplies:
                      • Cardstock/DSP: Whisper White (8 1/2 x 5 1/2, scrap), This Christmas Specialty Paper (5 x 2, 3 x 3), Garden Green (scrap), Cherry Cobbler (scrap, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 if doing the other card)
                      • Ink: Garden Green
